BALANCED LITERACY
PHONICS and WORD STUDY –We will be using Units of Study to learn and review letter names and sounds. This program incorporates visual aides, hand motions, songs, and is very interactive.
READING– We will primarily use the Reading Workshop model of instruction. The Units of Study follow the Common Core Standards. We will work on shared reading, read aloud, emergent story books, listening skills, comprehension, questioning, confidence boosting, sight words and reading for fluency. We will look at non-fiction, fiction books, nursery rhymes, and poetry.
WRITING- We will primarily use the Writing Workshop model of instruction. The year is broken up into five units. First we launch the writing workshop-teaching students how to get pictures and ideas on the page as a way to communicate with writing. This can includes the dictation of ideas in which students verbally explain their writing. We will then progress through units on Show and Tell items, Narrative story telling, Informational how to writing, and Opinion writing to make the world a better place. As students progress through the phonics program we will focus on phonetic spelling and the use of common sight words in their writing. Near the end of the year we will work on more conventional skills like the use of capitals, spacing, and simple punctuation.
MATH
We will be using the Everyday Math Kindergarten Series and other supplemental materials. This program is aligned with Common Core State Standards. This is a spiraling math series with hands-on activities. Spiraling means that there are not big units in order but rather lessons on a variety of math skills. We will be focusing on: calendar connections, problem solving, numbers sense, patterns, place value, graphing, skip counting, geometry, measurement, estimation, comparing amounts, as well as beginning addition and subtraction skills.
SCIENCE
There are three units of study that we will be focusing on in kindergarten following the NGSS Science Standards. We will be learning about weather, motion, and living things. Students will be learning to use their powers of observation, prediction, creating connections, and synthesizing their ideas.
SOCIAL STUDIES
Our social studies lessons will focus on the concept of self, family, school, community, rules, holidays, life in the past, and the concept of scarcity addressed by discussing wants verses needs.
SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING
We follow the Second Step program. It works to help develop student’s skills for learning, recognizing feelings, showing empathy, emotional management, and problem solving.
